All pupils should receive suitable tasks in their lessons. Staff are expertly trained in using adaptive teaching strategies to support and stretch pupils as required.
Where a child has difficulties which require additional support or abilities which require extending above and beyond the normal range, we liaise with parents, our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo), our More Able Co-Ordinator and Subject Leaders to put in place appropriate interventions.
More Able Pupils
Feltonfleet is a member of NACE (National Association for Able Children in Education). For pupils identified as ‘more able’ or ‘exceptionally able’ in a particular area, we ensure that appropriate challenge and support is in place. The More Able Co-ordinator oversees this and liaises with teachers to coordinate and monitor the provision. Our approach is not to overtly label any particular child, but to ensure that our pupils are being stretched to the best of their abilities, through, for example additional clubs, 1:1 support, projects, events and competitions.
Pre-Prep School Learning Support
In the Pre-Prep, we recognise that each child comes from a unique starting point and will develop at their own individual rate of learning. We observe, assess and monitor development closely. In some cases, children may not be reaching the expected level of development for their age and some may be exceeding in certain areas.
We carefully adapt our teaching around each pupil to enable them to reach their individual next steps. Sometimes this can involve support or extension and both come under the umbrella of Learning Enrichment.
The Learning Enrichment teacher oversees the implementation of Learning Enrichment in partnership with the Head of Pre-Prep. Support and extension are provided by class teachers in the first instance, with some small group, paired or one to one work. Where additional adult interaction is required, teaching assistants and the Deputy Head of Pre-Prep may offer more specific intervention.
In some cases where a specific programme of development needs to be followed, an Individual Support Plan (ISP) is created in partnership between the pupil, the teachers and the parents.
The Learning Enrichment teacher liaises with the SENCo and Learning Enrichment team in the Prep phases to ensure smooth transitions as children move through from Year 2 to Year 3.

The Learning Enrichment department provides in-class and small group work for pupils in Year 3 - 8, working closely with the English and Maths departments. If a pupil requires help over and above that which is normally available within a particular class or subject, 1:1 literacy support can be arranged with a peripatetic teacher.
We aim to identify, at the earliest opportunity, any child who may have special educational needs and disabilities and to ensure that their needs are met. When concerns are noted, teachers and members of the Learning Enrichment department work together to provide high quality interventions. A cyclical approach is followed: Assess, Plan, Do, Review. Pupils are monitored closely and it may be deemed necessary to carry out further investigations using more specific standardised tests. In some cases, the Learning Enrichment Department may recommend further assessment by an outside specialist, for example an Educational Psychologist, a Clinical Psychologist, a Speech and Language Therapist or an Occupational Therapist.
The SENCo is available to talk to any parents who have a concern about their child’s learning and will advise on and formulate a plan of action where required.
In some cases referral to external specialists is required and the Learning Enrichment Team will work in partnership with parents and other staff members to seek appropriate channels of referral and provide necessary information.
