Rewards
Academic effort, aspiration and progress are recognised in many ways, and wherever possible every child is publicly celebrated for their progress throughout the term. Merits are recorded for noteworthy work and these will appear on the pupil’s personal Firefly page.
House Points, physically represented by tokens in the Pre-Prep and Lower School, are awarded for pupils living out our core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and kindness.
Celebration Assesmblies are held each half term.
The annual Prize Day at the end of the Summer Term seeks to celebrate the achievements of our Year 8 pupils, but additional prizes are also awarded for a small selection of pupils in Years 5 - 7. It is one of the highlight events of the year.
Sanctions
In parallel with building and maintaining a positive ethos, is the need for a strong sense of discipline and self-regulation. The atmosphere throughout the School is happy, clear and purposeful. Learning behaviours and discipline follows the four core values of honesty, responsibility, respect and kindness, and is established upon the parallel key principles that, ‘ALL pupils have a right to learn’ and ‘ALL teachers have a right to teach’. Transparency and an understanding of the reasons behind our philosophy and ethos, leads to a school of pupils who know where they stand, in a space with clear and firm boundaries surrounded by fairness. A great deal of emphasis is placed upon the praise of, and reward for, good behaviour which models the four core values.
Naturally, a system of sanctions is necessary in any community to deter and manage poor behaviour and to promote self-aware good behaviour. At Feltonfleet we focus our attention on developing a pupil’s ability to ’check’ their own behaviour and then ’regulate’ it to fit the environment at that time.
Indiscipline will normally be dealt with at source by the class or activity teacher. In some cases this might lead to a sanction. A detention may also follow if a pupil (Years 3-8) is disrespectful, tardy, or repeatedly does not have the correct kit or equipment required. Form Tutors would seek to deal with minor disciplinary matters, Year Leaders with persistent or more serious matters. It is to be hoped that the Deputy Head, and Senior Deputy Head, and beyond that the Headmistress, would only rarely be required to act on more persistent or serious matters of indiscipline. The School will liaise fully and carefully with parents where appropriate.
Our Behaviour Policy and Anti-Bullying Policy are both shared in our School Policies section, and clearly lay out our approach.
